Download of the day - Weatherbug
Submitted by tuxedojericho on Sat, 09/20/2008 - 06:16
Weatherbug is a free weather client that sits neatly in your taskbar and gives you a lot of weather related information. On the bar, it displays the current tempature for your area. Also, in the event of severe weather, it will chirp at you, and flash the little bug icon over the tempature ont he task bar. While the map isn't as great as what you can get on weather.com, it's still a really good desktop weather client.
It is also avaliable for the MAC, and can even be intergrated into CAMTWIST as an overlay, to give the current tempature on live video streams.

Open Source
Submitted by admin on Sun, 03/23/2008 - 03:59Software can cost, and sometimes it isn't pretty. Just look at Microsoft Office, or Adobe Photoshop, but it doesn't always have to cost money. Open Source software is free to download and use and it can at sometimes work jsut as good if not better than the pay stuff on the market. So lets take a look at some of the best open source software out there for the Windows platform (someone else is gonna have to deal with the Mac side of things, becuase I don't have one.)
Browsing around the interwebs
Any question which one wins here? Firefox is by far the best open source browser out there. Nothing beats Firefox's ability to customize, whether it be through themes, or extensions. Pluse the ability to use tabbed browsing, and popup blocking make firefox a clear pick for an enjoyable open source browsing time.
Email Client
Mozilla again rules here, with there email client Thunderbird. Gives all the features you will ever need, excellent spam filtering (at some times even too good). Plus it has the customization abilities of Firefox with addons and themes.
Instant Messaging
Are you sick of having to have tons of programs open for all your Instant Messaging Clients? Well throw away your Google talk, yahoo!, MSN, ICQ, and go with Pidgin. Pidgin works with: AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo!, Zephyr. If you can find anymore things I'd like to know.
Video playback
Alright time for some fun stuff. Videos and video podcasting are huge now, and you need something to watch them in, and there are 2 excellent programs that are open source and are extremely useful. the first is Miro, which allows the user to subscribe to videos and automatically updates and downloads the newest episode of the podcast (via RSS). Now you can use it to get the newest episodes of TV shows but that isn't legal so I'm not going to cover it.
The second one is VLC player. This little bugger plays all the major formats of video and audio. The interface on it is great and it includes tons of shoutcast streams (both audio and video).
Ripping Tools
Want to get that DVD to your Computer? Maybe you need to convert a video or Audio file to upload to the internet. The first program is handbrake, a program that many people swear by. I tried it on the windows platform and had some trouble, but of course this was when it first came out. Mac users, one of them Bwana, swears by it as a way to get movies onto his iPhone.
The second one is Media Coder, and this one will rip CDs and DVDs, and encode them in a multitude of formats. I use this bugger all the time and it has never let me down.
